Formerly known as the Whitireia Community Polytechnic, Whitireia is a leading institute for tertiary education in New Zealand. It is owned and funded by the government. The institution was established as a community college in Porirua Harbour in the year 1986. In its foundation year, the institution had 78 staff members. In 1989, its name was changed to Whitireia Community Polytechnic. Whitireia adopted its current name in the year 2011. The institution operates in collaboration with the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec). It signed a strategic partnership WelTec in 2012, which aims at delivering more academic options and opportunities to students.

Whitireia hosts classes at its five campuses in Auckland, Petone, Porirua, and Wellington. Located about 20 minutes away from Wellington, the Porirua campus is the main campus of the Whitireia. Built-in the year 1986, it is amongst the most beautiful institutional sites in the country. Auckland Campus, situated on Queen Street in the city, houses the schools of social service, business, information technology, and English language. Petone Campus is barely a 15-minute drive from the city of Wellington. This campus has the central library, gym, athletic field, cafeteria, and hairdressing salon. Situated on Dixon Street, Wellington CBD campus is home to the Graduate School and a section of the business school.

The campuses feature several buildings that house administrative offices, lecture halls, learning centers, and recreational spaces. The institution shares its library system with WelTec. The libraries provide various services and resources to meet the educational and information needs of students and faculty members. They hold a comprehensive collection of digital and printed resources related to various subjects of study. The students have access to free Wi-Fi across all the campuses. Free bus service allows students to commute between the campuses in Wellington, Porirua, and Petone.

The academic structure of Whitereia includes several schools and centers situated across multiple campuses, offering courses to a diverse range of learners. It offers over 135 programs at the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The institution renders programmes in distinct disciplines of arts, architecture, business, education, media studies, health, nursing, social science, hospitality, social work, beauty and hairdressing, mass communication, information technology, and engineering. At present, the institution has over 6,200 students enrolled in various programs. About 3,440 students are pursuing their full-time degree programs at Whitireia and these include 1,144 international students. The institution has a highly qualified and skilled management team of members committed toward assuring the highest standards of education. With over 408 academic staff members, the full-time student-to-faculty ratio at the institution is 8:1.
